Process of Upper Mustang Road Trip

If you are considering a short 4-day, 1-week, or longer road trip itinerary to Upper Mustang, be sure to allow one full working day to obtain the Restricted Area Permit (RAP), which can only be issued by a registered trekking company. The permit is similar to a visa, but it is attached to a permit paper instead of your passport.

The road trip takes you to Lo Manthang, the forbidden kingdom (capital of Upper Mustang), and our final destination, which is close to the Tibetan border. You will visit centuries-old monasteries, ancient caves (see the National Geographic documentary for an idea), archaeological sites, landscapes, and geographical diversity. Your Upper Mustang Drive Tour will be escorted by a local guide, who will be with you until the end of your tour with us.

Once you book your trip with us, please send us a scan of your passport and a photo so that we can process the permits. On your arrival date, we will pick you up from the airport and collect your original passport. We need to show your original passport to the immigration office. Once we have the permits, we are all set for our road trip to Upper Mustang!

The suggested 12-day Upper Mustang road trip itinerary is perfect for all age groups. The itinerary can be customized and personalized, so let us know your days and plans, and we will create one for you. Taking a flight to Pokhara or from Jomsom is optional, and doing so can minimize the tour plan. You will be welcomed by our representative at the airport, where you will see your name and a (Day Tours Nepal) sign. Free WiFi is available at the airport, and you can purchase a local SIM card (NCELL, NTC) if you wish. The drive from the airport to your hotel will take 25 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic and hotel location. Check in to your hotel and enjoy a welcome dinner with Day Tours Nepal in the evening.

    During breakfast, a Day Tours Nepal tour officer will come to your hotel to collect your original passport. We will issue your Upper Mustang permit and other paperwork. At 9:30 AM, you will meet your city guide and begin sightseeing around the Kathmandu Valley, visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Today, your tour guide will take you to Swayambhunath, Patan Durbar Square, Pashupatinath Temple, and Boudhanath Stupa. After sightseeing, you will be transferred back to your hotel. You are on your own this evening to enjoy the peaceful evening and dinner around Thamel. In Thamel, you can find many nice restaurants, including vegetarian and vegan options.

      The departure time to Pokhara is 8:00 AM. Please finish your breakfast before then. Your guide will be at your hotel with a vehicle, and we will see beautiful mountain scenery on the way.

      Optionally, we can stop for white water rafting in the Trishuli River for 1 to 3 hours if you wish. There are many nice restaurants along the way for lunch breaks, and your guide will suggest the best one for you.

      Once we approach Pokhara, you will enjoy magnificent views of Mount Annapurna, Machhapuchhare (Fishtail), and other mountain peaks. After checking into your hotel in Pokhara, take a walk around Fewa Lake and enjoy a delicious meal nearby. Overnight in Pokhara.

        It's good to wake up early in the morning so you can enjoy the beautiful mountain ranges from your hotel. After breakfast at the hotel, our Upper Mustang road trip begins. We will drive towards Beni, the first section of which is blacktop. After Beni, we will follow the Kali Gandaki River. The road from Beni to Kagbeni is a mix of well-paved and bumpy sections.

        The Kali Gandaki Valley is the world's deepest gorge, and we will see it along the way. This is not just a drive; we will be stopping in beautiful spots for pictures and waterfalls. Along the way, we will see greenery, landscapes, beautiful waterfalls, rivers, local villages, an apple farm in Marpha village, Jomsom, and of course, the mountain highlights of the day. We will pass the natural hot spring where we will stay on our return journey. Overnight in Kagbeni.

          7;30 Breakfast time, after breakfast we will drive to Ghami Village. The restriction area of Upper Mustang is from Kagbeni. We will be visiting Kagbeni Monastery, Buddhist school, Chhusang village Chella village, Samar village, Syangboche village, Bhina, Ghiling and Ghami Village. The landscapes and the views are amazing along the way. We will be stopping in nice places for pictures and videos. Overnight in Ghami Village.

          • Kagbeni

          At 2,804 meters above sea level, Kagbeni is a historic Tibetan town located on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River. It is renowned for its landscape, culture, traditions, and natural beauty. In addition, Kagbeni is a significant Buddhist and Hindu holy site. Hindus use Kagbeni as a significant location for Pitri-sraddha, a rite for their ancestors' departed souls. With significant Buddhist temples and monasteries dating back many years, Kagbeni is a significant village for Buddhists. The entire village is a Tibetan village unlike any other. They are comparable to Tibet in language, way of life, and scenery. Tourism-wise, Kagbeni is likewise quite well-liked. Walking down the small trail between the ancient mud huts with vibrant prayer flags is a magnificent experience. It is situated on the Annapurna Circuit Trek route. Experience the culture and traditions of Tibet directly at Kagbeni.

            We're going to the oldest monastery today. Mustang is a great place to go on a road trip and a spiritual place to gather energy while traveling. The most significant gompa in Mustang is Lo Gager Ghar Gompa. You can also visit Charang monastery, Lo-mangthang city, "Jampa Gompa," the oldest monastery and also known as the "God house," "Thubchen Gompa," a massive red assembly hall and gompa constructed in the late 15th century, and "Chodey Gompa," which is currently the primary gompa and Monastic Museum. We'll stay the night in the settlement of Lo-Manthang.

              You will tour Namgyal Gompa, the Sky caverns of Chhoser, and the SHIJA JHONG cave of Mustang today after breakfast. These caverns are almost 3,000 years old and have been the topic of excavation for archaeologists from all over the world. A number of other caves in the vicinity of Chhoser have been utilized for living, sleeping, and meditation.

                We will be driving same way back to upto Kagbeni and from Kagbeni drive up to Muktinath, overnight in Muktinath.

                Muktinath

                Muktinath is a revered holy site for both Hindus and Buddhists, situated at an altitude of 3,710 meters. For Hindus, it is one of the most ancient temples of Lord Vishnu and the Vaishnava tradition. The shrine is considered to be one of the eight sacred places known as Svayam Vyakta Ksetras and one of the 108 Divya Desam. For Buddhists, Muktinath is a sacred place of the Dakinis goddesses and a manifestation of Avalokitesvara. The Tibetan Buddhist tradition states that Guru Rimpoche meditated here on his way to Tibet. After completing prayers and worship at the Muktinath temple many pilgrims, both Hindu and Buddhist, visit Mebar Lha Gomba, the small monastery of `miraculous fire', which is situated near the entrance gate of the temple. This monastery, dedicated to Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava) and containing a statue of the Buddhist deity Chenrezig (Avalokitesvara), is famous for its continuously burning natural gas fire, which Hindus worship as Jwala Mai, the Goddess of Fire.

                          Upper Mustang Festival and Events

                          Tiji Festival Dates: 2024

                          The Tiji Festival is a three-day colorful festival celebrated in Lo-Manthang.  If you have the chance to participate, you should! The purpose of the festival is to pray that peace on Earth prevails.  The festival is celebrated to mark the victory of Buddha’s incarnation over the demon that had been wreaking havoc in the region during ancient times.  During the festival, Buddhist monks in the monastery perform an entertaining dance ceremony.  The 2024 Tiji Festival takes place on the 5th, 6th, and 7th of May.  This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so hopefully you can make it!

                          Dashian Festival "Inside Nepal"

                          The longest and most significant celebration in Nepal is Dashain. The ten-day event honors the triumph of good over evil. Equal numbers of Hindus and Buddhists participate in the holiday. Dashain is a time for gathering with family and friends to rejoice.                           Indra Jatra Festival Kathmandu

The monsoon season is another great time of year for the Upper Mustang Road Trip. There is a chance of landslides from Beni to Jomsom, but this tour is perfect all year round.

                          • The Upper Mustang permit fee is 500 USD for all nationalities except Nepalese. It is the same, 500 USD, for Indian citizens.                           • If you are thinking of traveling alone in Upper Mustang, this is not possible. The Upper Mustang permit is issued by the Nepal Immigration Department, and only registered trekking agencies that have cleared taxes, have a USD license, and have proper insurance for their staff can apply for the permits. You must have a valid passport for at least six months, a Nepal visa, and a government-licensed guide. Day Tours Nepal will arrange the guide for you. It takes us one half working day to issue Upper Mustang trekking permits.
